Mathematics

The union of the mathematician with the poet, fervor with measure, passion with correctness, this surely is the ideal.

-- William James (1842 – 19110)

310 Algebra I

This second year of algebra analyzes and solves mathematical problems involving: real number systems, inequalities, linear equations and functions and their graphs, polynomials, rational expressions, irrational and complex numbers, quadratic equations and functions.

The simplest schoolboy is now familiar with facts for which Archimedes would have sacrificed his life.
-- Ernest Renan (1823-1892)

320 Plane Geometry

321 PSC Geometry Honors

Semester/Year Course: Full Year
Required/Elective: Required
These courses present comprehensive topic coverage and its balanced treatment of the different aspects of Geometry: theory and application; informal and formal reasoning; symbolic and visual thinking; synthetic, coordinate and transformational methods; and trigonometric functions. Each chapter includes a wide range of questions which are weighted for the degree of difficulty.

330 Algebra II

Descartes commanded the future from his study more than Napoleon from the throne.
-- Oliver Wendell Holmes (1809-1894)

331 Pre-Calculus

Prerequisite: Honors Geometry
Semester/Year Course: Full Year
Required/Elective: Required
This course includes a review of linear and quadratic functions and the study of polynomial functions, inequalities, inverse functions, exponential and logarithmic functions, analytic geometry, and trigonometric functions and their applications.

341 Trigonometry

Semester/Year Course: Full Year
Required/Elective: Required
This course resolves mathematical problems using trigonometric properties involving: acute angles and right angles, circular functions, laws of sine and cosines, fundamental identities and their proofs, graphing elementary functions, inverse circular functions, and vector operations.

340 Prep College Algebra

Semester/Year Course: Full Year
Required/Elective: Required
Prep College Algebra is a full-year course that can satisfy the senior Math requirement with the recommendation of the prior Mathematics teacher. Topics include rational expressions and equations, quadratic equations, complex numbers, functions and relations, and exponential and logarithmic functions. Applications appropriate to everyday living, business, science, and related fields will be presented.

The imaginary number is a fine and wonderful recourse of the divine spirit, almost an amphibian between being and not being.
-- Gottfried Leibniz (1646-1716)

350 AP Calculus

Semester/Year Course: Full Year
Required/Elective: Required
Prerequisite: Pre-Calculus
This courseincludes a review of functions and the study of limits and continuity, the derivative, analysis of functions and their graphs, applications of the derivative, integration, and applications of the definite integral to area between curves and volumes.

The study of mathematics cannot be replaced by any other activity that will train and develop man's purely logical faculties to the same level of rationality.
