High School Academic Program
The primary purpose at the Cardinal Gibbons School is to educate boys in an environment where they may receive guidance, support, and strategies necessary for academic success.
At Cardinal Gibbons curriculum is constantly evaluated to find opportunities for expansion and improvement. Staff and students are invited to change, grow, and achieve in a climate characterized by strong educational leadership, effective communication, order and organization.
The School provides a rigorous college preparatory program. Students may select programs with concentrations in math and engineering, or choose from advanced courses in business, literature, history, fine arts, foreign language, science, or technology.
Cardinal Gibbons’ freshman and sophomores have the opportunity to enroll in Project Lead the Way (http://www.pltw.org/Engineering/Curriculum/Curriculum-high-school.cfm) for aspiring engineers. Upperclassmen are invited to choose elective courses in the arts and business. In our Parallel Enrollment Program (PEP), juniors and seniors can enroll and take college course work, receive college credit as well as gain their elective credit for high school graduation.
As an Archdiocesan school, Cardinal Gibbons follows the religious education prescribed by the Archdiocese of Baltimore. In addition to these Christian teachings, traditions and church history, students are also exposed to other faiths through their study of Hebrew Scriptures. This educational journey is finalized with a course in social justice to adequately arm each student to face real world challenges and help with decisions following their graduation.
Our small class sizes provide each student a more individualized learning environment. For those students who may need additional support, Cardinal Gibbons provides academic support services to provide liaisons between parent and school. In addition, students and teachers are advised on studying strategies most appropriate to the task, the situation, and their individual cognitive styles and learner characteristics. Guidance is needed in some cases, to help children overcome the social and emotional issues that often inhibit academic success. Our support staff meets with teachers to help them address students' needs and also with students and parents both individually and in small groups.
